Barry M Lip Kits – Holy Grail or Total Fail? – Georgia Phelps Beauty

As I’m sure a lot of people would have seen by now, Barry M have recently launched their own versions of lip kits and it’s driven a lot of people into absolute madness. Of course, the ever so famous Kylie Jenner was the one who started the ‘lip kit’ hype and everybody went crazy when she launched hers. Since then, a variety of different brands have launched their own kits including Make-Up Revolution and recently, Barry M too.

I posted a poll on Twitter last weekend to find out what posts people wanted to read on my blog and this came up as the top voted, very clear winner so here we are. As requested, here’s your review of the Barry M lip kits.

What’s included in the kit:

Just like the Kylie ones, these kits include both a lip liner and matching liquid lipstick. Both products are full sized which is great as the price is so affordable it’s crazy! Retailing at just £7.99 and currently also on a 3-for-2 offer in Boots, these kits are unmissable.

The kits are available both in a matte finish and also a metallic finish so you can either pick up your every day, comfort zone shade or go a little more daring and play around with some metallic shades too.

Packaging:

The packaging for these lip kits is pretty much as you’d expect. Your standard liquid lipstick in a little box with it’s matching lipliner so there isn’t really too much to say on that one.

However, one thing I did notice is that the font that is printed onto the lipstick feels and looks quite cheap so my worry would be that it would fade off and disappear from the packaging (fine for everyday users but a pain in the ass if you’re a blogger in terms of photos – a constant nightmare with the Collection Lasting Perfection concealer!) but I guess only time will tell with that one so I’ll keep people updated on my Instagram stories with that one! Packaging wise, the lipliner very much looks and feels just like the classic MAC ones which doesn’t bother me at all. I definitely prefer lip liners that you sharpen as opposed to ones that are retractable.

Formula:

Now, at a first look this formula can be pretty off putting. That is of course if you do something ridiculous like my friend Bekki and I did at work one day. We both work in Boots so as you can imagine, it’s extremely tempting to browse the latest beauty products every now and again to see what’s new, trending and worth buying. One day we were looking at these Barry M lip kits and oohing and aahing over how incredibly pigmented the formulas were and how beautiful the shades were. However, what we didn’t realise whilst doing so was that Bekki was holding the liquid lipstick upside down in her hand (never normally a problem with liquid lipsticks!) and the formula was so watery that it literally all dribbled out into a burnt orange puddle on the floor. Both hilarious and a nightmare all at the same time but it did worry me a little bit that when applied to the lips, the pigmentation might be a little shit.

Surprisingly, the formula is insane! It’s probably actually one of the best affordable ones I’ve come across. They wear incredibly well on the lips and although they’re matte and feel a little dry, they don’t suck all of the life from your lips so they’re pretty comfortable to wear too. The liners are soft and creamy and unlike a lot of affordable pencils, they don’t scratch or drag on the lips at all. Overall, I’m super impressed with the formula of both the lipstick and lipliner.

Overall Verdict:

After a fair amount of testing and trialling, these lip kits definitely get a thumbs up from me and pass as 100%, a new holy grail. I honestly didn’t expect these to be as good as they are and although I’ve never tried any of the Kylie Cosmetics lip kits, based on photographs that I’ve seen I would say that the pigmentation and finish of these is on par, if not actually BETTER than hers.

I’m really looking forward to picking up more shades in the future and sharing different looks on Instagram using them too! If you don’t already, make sure you give me a follow at @georgiaphelpsbeauty to stay posted with any upcoming looks or swatches.
